The Boy with Magical Powers

Yesterday after church, while Carter was eating lunch, Mark noticed he wasn't using his right arm at all, which is unusual since he prefers that hand when feeding himself.  Mark started messing with his arm and quickly realized something was wrong.  Now, when I'd picked him up from nursery not even an hour earlier, he lifted up both arms to me, so I knew it had to have happened sometime after picking him up and before lunch.  He wasn't acting like it hurt unless you tried moving it around - he simply wasn't using it.  Of course, this would happen on a Sunday when our pediatrician is closed, so Mark took him into Children's Urgent Care.  When he arrived, there was a 2-3 hour wait to be seen.  Within an hour, he was called to fill out paperwork.  At some point, Carter ran away and down a hallway, so Mark went to go get him only to see him trip and fall and catch himself... with both arms.  As soon as he got up, he began using his right arm again, and when Mark moved it around, it no longer seemed to bother him.  Yay for a child who fixes his own injuries!  I think it was nursemaid's elbow.  I'm fairly certain he's going to grow up to be a superhero... or maybe a doctor.

Also, I've been summoned for jury duty.  Mark's always wanted to do jury duty.  I'm hoping I can get out of it since I have 2 small kids at home and no one to watch them should I have to report.

Cars & Snow

Okay, I just wrote out this long post complaining about our Subaru.  After having put $900 into it in December for sensors (don't even get me started about having to pay that much to replace something to alert us if something goes wrong), Monday night Mark was driving home from work and the battery & brake lights came on and the power steering seemed to go out (funny, since the battery light didn't come on when the battery was dying).  I did my ususal google research and thought it was going to be the alternator.  Mark took it to a garage down the road (so he could walk home... the van is also in poor running condition).  They called a short while later to say it looked like something else was wrong as well and it might take several days (his tone was quite ominous).  I was expecting the worst and frustrated at all the money it looked like we would be sinking into this car.  However, as I was writing, they called again very sorry that it was going to be a whole $400.  Still, not money I want to put into a car, but significantly less than I was expecting!

We are enjoying the snow today.  One good thing about not having a running car (well, that we trust to go farther than 20 minutes away) is that Mark is home today.  He was scheduled to go to Columbus for training.  I kind of wonder if he might be called to go into his store, though.  While there is no problem for him to pick up an extra shift, getting an "extra" one off isn't typically accepted.  We did get to play outside in the snow a bit.  Poor Carter was the little brother from A Christmas Story.  He kept falling down and couldn't get himself up.  I still managed to get a smile, and Ava had a blast making snow angels and eating snow.

Busy morning

A few weeks ago, I signed up to take a meal to a family who was due to have a new baby.  I picked today because Mark was supposed to be home as we were scheduled to have U-Verse installed today.  This way, I could get the meal done and delivered a little easier.  Alas, things don't always work out as planned.  His area manager scheduled a "career fair" and all managers are required to attend.  And, we're getting snow.  As soon as I got up, I got started on the meal, so I could get it delivered early today before we got too much snow (I'm still not convinced we'll get that much).

I thought Ava would like to help me make cookies, but she was only interested in the Hershey's kisses and licking the beaters.  I'd turned on a cartoon for Carter, and she decided that was more interesting the making cookies.  Once they were done, she kept bugging me for a cookie (I used the old, "If you ask one more time about a cookie, you won't get any" technique, and it worked to quiet her... she knows I mean it).  Once I thought they cooled sufficiently (ie, the chocolate wouldn't be super-messy), I let them each have one.  I took 2 pictures of Ava, and when I turned to Carter his cookie was mostly gone - he'd shoved the entire thing (well, what didn't get on his face) in his mouth.

Unfortunately for her, she lost the right to enjoy any more cookies as a short while later, I caught her eating a cookie she'd swiped from the counter.  So sneaky!

When I was downloading pics of the cookies, I found this one from a few days ago.  The boy loves to line all his trucks up.  The used to get parked under the table... now they go on top.

So far so good

Mark called me this morning to say they manager who is supposed to close is sick, so if he couldn't find a replacement, he'd be staying to close.  BUT, he'd then get Friday off.  (Usually, when he picks up an extra shift, he doesn't get one off, so this was a nice perk!)

Since the kids wouldn't see him all day, I decided we'd visit Target and then go to Chipotle for lunch, followed up by a visit to the bookstore to play with the trains and then a run in to Trader Joe's to get some things we're out of.  I mainly wanted to hit Target because they have Kashi cereal bars on sale and I got a bunch of coupons in the mail and I need a small planner so I don't forget to pay the bills on time.  I got neither - out of cereal bars and they wanted $5 for the small little planner I liked.

I did, however, hit the jackpot on clearanced clothes for the kids for next winter!  One winter coat, one pair of boots (actually for this winter for Carter... now that I'm prepared, though, we probably won't get any snow!), 4 pairs of pants, 5 shirts, 2 sweaters and 2 pairs of pj's all for $50.  I figure I can keep the tags on the boots and if we don't get snow in the next 90 days, they can go back .

It was a nice little outing.  Carter loved the train table and thankfully we had it to ourselves as he felt the need to line each and every train up on the track.  Ava was more interested in all the books.  As a bonus, they each got balloons at TJ's.  I've decided we need to take more little outings during the winter months.  It's good for all of us to get out of the house and there are plenty of places we can go for fun that are free!  I do have to admit it could be dangerous going to the bookstore to play... I didn't buy anything, but I was tempted.  Maybe I should leave my wallet in the car from now on.
